Camping in Talladega National Forest
I recently took the boys on their inaugural overlanding and camping trip, starting right here in our home state of Alabama at Talladega State Park. This park features two fantastic off-road trails, County Road 600-1 and County Road 600-2, both of which promised an exciting adventure.
We kicked off our journey with County Road 600-1. This trail was accessible enough for most trucks, making it a great starting point for our trip. The scenic views from the top of the mountain were breathtaking, especially the power line vista and the panoramic perspective from the fire tower.
Along the way, we encountered some friendly locals who shared their insights about camping spots in the area. They recommended a campsite near Rob Roy Falls, a stunning waterfall within Talladega State Park. Eager to check it out, we decided to head in that direction. A 4x4 vehicle is definitely necessary for the journey, especially to set up camp right by the falls.
Upon arrival, I realized I had made a rookie mistake by purchasing a brand-new tent that I had never set up before. As we arrived later in the day, our setup process didn’t go as smoothly as I had hoped. Despite the initial challenges, we managed to get the tent up and started a campfire.
After a hearty dinner, we settled in for the night, feeling accomplished after a wonderful day of overlanding and camping in the beautiful Talladega State Park. This trip was not only a fun adventure but also a fantastic bonding experience for us all.
